3/4/10 - University of Rhode Island students could soon face university punishment for being in the same room as alcohol or illegal drugs, under proposed changes to the Student Handbook presented by the administration.
Other suggestions include a new policy that would make "failure to report violations of university policy" punishable by conduct action and restrict the kinds of appliances allowed in residence halls.

This past Tuesday saw the latest hearing at the Northampton District Court concerning Jason Vassell, a former, black UMass student who was assaulted two years ago in his dorm. In days following his assault, Jason was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, despite video footage and evidence from multiple witnesses that demonstrated his white assailants, John Bowes and Jonathan Bosse, had targeted him, shouting racial slurs at Vassell before they forced entry into his dorm and attacked him.

A proposal to charge a one percent "higher education tax" has been put on the docket for discussion at the annual Norton town hall meeting that will take place on May 10.
The petition was championed by Norton resident John Freeman who says, by his calculations, Wheaton would pay $766,000 the first year.

Wheaton College Dining Services has elected to participate in the RecycleMania competition, from Jan. 17 through March 27, in which college campuses across the country compete to promote waste reduction on campus.
According to Director of Dining Services John Bragel, "It is something that ARAMARK has sponsored through the years," but made a point to mention that RecycleMania is not an ARAMARK event.
