03/02/10 - One year ago, the University of Massachusetts guard Chris Lowe sprinted past the University of Rhode Island's Lamonte Ulmer (who had just been flattened via a Matt Glass body check), rushed toward the basket seemingly unguarded, and lifted a game winning lay-up over Kahiem Seawright as the horn sounded to win the game, 72-71, on URI's senior night - effectively ruining the Rams last ditch effort to make the NCAA tournament.

3/5/10 - The United States men's hockey team entered the 2010 Winter Olympics without high expectations.

Team USA stunned hockey fans by breezing through the preliminary round and not stumbling until the gold medal match, a 3-2 overtime loss to the host nation, Canada.

The Orange have taken the country by storm. As of Monday they were ranked number one in the AP poll for the first time in 26 years. Their 15-2 conference record is good for best in the Big East. Even if 'Cuse slips up in the conference tournament they're status is unlikely to change.

Going into the 2010 Olympic games in Vancouver the U.S. Men's Hockey team certainly was not the overall favorite to win gold. After all, Canada's roster was filled with NHL superstars and Russia's first line composed of Alexander Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, and Ilya Kovalchuk was arguably one of the scariest lines ever assembled.

Bryant: The best worst team in the country

The Archway, Bryant College, RI

Until last Thursday, the Bryant University Men's Basketball Team was the last NCAA Division I program without a win. If you're not first you're last, the expression goes. That makes them the worst team in the country then, right? Wrong. Bryant is the best team in the country, at losing at least.

Torch Talk: A lesson in sportsmanship

Believe it or not, I once competed in the Olympics. Granted, I was in fourth grade, and it was my elementary school's modified Winter Olympics, but it was as real to me as I'm sure Vancouver is to the athletes there. I distinctly remember skiing toward the finish line of the biathlon course, gunning for third place, when a classmate overtook me on the final stretch and deprived me of the chance to get a bronze medal in front of the entire school.

3/4/10 - Last fall Billy Baron, son of men's basketball coach Jim Baron and the younger brother of former University of Rhode Island stand-out Jimmy Baron, committed to play basketball for the Rams.

Billy was to follow in his older brother's footsteps and be coached by his father for the next four years.

Not every Friday night for the gentlemen of the Wheaton men's rugby team consists of auctioning themselves off, as they did this past weekend with their second annual fund-raising Date Auction.

On another recent Friday night, Feb. 12, the "ruggers" traveled up to Grantham, N.

Every year in the middle of the spring semester, when it is still way too cold for most of us to walk outside, the notoriously gutsy and tough Smith College crew team busts out the ergs and heads to the Campus Center for some hardcore fundraising.

So, let's start from the beginning.

Torch Talk: A fitting finale

As the Vancouver Games drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a little relieved. The athletes have left, the stadiums are empty and the records will stand for the moment - and in the case of Kim Yu-Na's 228.56 points in ladies' figure skating, probably for a long time to come.

For this column, I am being openly unoriginal. I will be taking this style of column writing from Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe. From time to time, he dedicates his space in the Globe to a news, notes and opinion section. It's a great way to touch on a wide variety of important topics in the sports world, locally and nationally.
